Forschungszentrum Jülich has advanced several hydrogen-related technological initiatives in Germany. Initially, the institution partnered with schwartz Gruppe to launch the HyHeat pilot plant in Simmerath. This project, funded in part by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, tests the feasibility of using hydrogen for high-temperature industrial processes, such as the press hardening of automotive parts, to reduce CO2 emissions.

Following this, the research center expanded its electrocatalysis capabilities by commissioning two high-throughput electrolysis plants developed in collaboration with hte. These new installations, which include high-pressure PEM electrolysis and alkaline water and CO2 electrolysis facilities, are designed to mimic industrial environments. The systems aim to accelerate the development of efficient, scalable electrolysis processes through parallelized testing and digitized workflows.
