The error occurred when a Hypercharge station experienced a loss of wireless connection between the hardware and the central system during a session in May 2025.

Because the system failed to register that the vehicle had disconnected, it continued to apply a fixed hourly rate for over 460 days. While the actual energy delivered was only 4.91 kWh, the billing clock remained active until August 25, 2026. Following a formal complaint, the operator has stopped the automated charges in its control system and terminated the disputed session in its management system to prevent further costs.

Hypercharge has since clarified that the massive amount was never actually charged to the owner’s credit card; instead, the error appeared as a negative balance within the digital wallet of the company’s app. The company has corrected the session and provided the driver with a small credit as compensation.
