The event focused on ‘Human-Centric Performance’ and the role of human factors in maintaining safety amidst technological shifts such as AI and automation. During the summit, IATA Global Safety Director Mark Searle noted that Turkey is now the world’s 7th largest aviation market, with international passenger traffic growing approximately 70 percent over the last decade. Searle also reported that while fatal accident rates have improved—decreasing from one per 3.5 million flights a decade ago to one per 5.6 million flights in 2025—there were still 394 fatalities recorded in 2025. Discussions also addressed critical operational risks, specifically Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) interference, including GPS jamming and spoofing, particularly for airlines operating near geopolitical conflict zones. Experts emphasized the need for crews to utilize alternative procedures to maintain safety when navigation is disrupted. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-09: Turkish Airlines hosts IATA aviation safety summit in Istanbul At the IATA World Safety and Operations Conference in Istanbul, aviation leaders discussed safety, AI integration, and the risks of GPS interference and jamming in geopolitical conflict zones. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/turkish-airlines-hosts-iata-aviation-safety-summit-in-istanbul ### 2026-10-06: IATA World Safety and Operations Conference begins in Istanbul The IATA World Safety and Operations Conference is underway in Istanbul, hosted by Turkish Airlines.
