This integration, finalized during a symposium in Montreal, allows international immigration and customs authorities to perform instantaneous electronic verifications of Paraguayan chip-based passports. By utilizing the UN-managed global repository, Paraguay moves away from individual bilateral validation agreements toward a single, interoperable standard. This system enables authorities to audit microchip data to ensure biographical and biometric information has not been modified. The ICAO PKD infrastructure facilitates the exchange of cryptographic certificate information, allowing border authorities to authenticate electronic travel documents by verifying electronic signatures. This is complemented by Chip Authentication, which uses an interactive cryptographic process to ensure data is presented by a legitimate, original integrated circuit rather than a digital copy. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-15: ICAO Public Key Directory and chip authentication secure electronic passports The ICAO Public Key Directory and Chip Authentication technologies enhance electronic passport security by enabling international certificate exchange and verifying the authenticity of physical passport chips. 5 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/icao-public-key-directory-and-chip-authentication-secure-electronic-passports ### 2026-09-26: Paraguay validates electronic passports with ICAO Paraguay has integrated its electronic passport signature certificates into the ICAO Public Key Directory, enabling secure, instantaneous global verification of its travel documents. 6 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/paraguay-validates-electronic-passports-with-icao --- Cite as: ICAO electronic passport authentication standards.
