The Icelandic chess scene is experiencing a period of transition and growth. While the national team faced setbacks at the Chess Olympiad, including a loss to Denmark that dropped their standing from 48th to 58th place, there is significant optimism regarding the sport’s future.

Grandmaster Helgi Áss Grétarsson has noted the rapid development of a young generation of players, specifically those aged 8 to 13. Notable rising talents include Jósef Ómarsson, who recently won the Reykjavík Chess Club championship, as well as young players Haukur Víðir Leifsson, Pétur Úlfar Ernisson, and Helgi Fannar Óðinsson.
