# Identification of new baobab species in Madagascar

Researchers from the Missouri Botanical Garden, the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and Iowa State University have identified a new baobab species in western Madagascar, named Adansonia bozy. 

Using phylogenetic methods and genetic analysis, scientists determined that Adansonia bozy is genetically distinct from trees previously classified as Adansonia za. While the species shares morphological similarities with other baobabs, it is more closely related to different groups in northern Madagascar. This discovery brings the total number of known baobab species to nine.

Adansonia bozy is preliminarily classified as critically endangered due to its small population size and the ongoing threat of deforestation. Experts suggest that this taxonomic clarification is essential for directing conservation and restoration efforts toward the species.
