IELTS examinations organized by the British Council were abruptly canceled across multiple locations in mainland China between October 10 and October 13 due to technical system failures originating in the United Kingdom. The disruption affected both full exams and individual component retakes, with some candidates being notified of cancellations upon arrival and others being instructed to stop mid-exam. Initially, the British Council committed to issuing full refunds of registration fees within one working day, though students expressed frustration regarding unrecoverable travel and accommodation costs. Following further developments, the organization announced it would host free special makeup exam sessions on October 19 and 20. Additionally, candidates traveling from other cities may apply for reimbursement of reasonable transportation and accommodation expenses. The cancellations occurred during the peak application season for universities in Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, and Singapore, creating significant distress for students needing timely language proficiency results to meet admission deadlines. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-13: IELTS exams cancelled across mainland China due to system failure IELTS exams in mainland China faced widespread cancellations due to a technical system failure in the UK, prompting the British Council to offer full refunds and free makeup sessions in late October. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/ielts-exams-cancelled-across-mainland-china-due-to-system-failure ### 2026-10-10: IELTS exams canceled across mainland China due to technical issues IELTS exams organized by the British Council were canceled across mainland China on October 10-11 due to technical issues, disrupting university application timelines for many students. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/ielts-exams-canceled-across-mainland-china-due-to-technical-issues --- Cite as: IELTS exam cancellations in mainland China.
