Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati have developed two distinct biological methods for treating industrial and agricultural wastewater.

In September 2026, the team introduced an eco-friendly treatment for textile wastewater containing toxic azo dyes. By utilizing a novel bacterium, ‘Brevundimonas sp. AJZ05’, the method employs an enzyme to degrade synthetic dyes. Testing showed a 98.50% degradation rate of Direct Blue-6, producing non-toxic byproducts.

In October 2026, the research expanded to include a nature-based system for swine wastewater. This low-energy approach uses taro plants and an engineered ‘zig-zag flow’ design to increase contact time between pollutants and microorganisms. The system demonstrated significant reductions in organic pollutants and pathogens, specifically lowering total coliform and E. coli levels while reducing cytotoxicity.
