A violent confrontation at the Naira and Kobo motor park in Ikire, Osun State, has resulted in the deaths of at least two civilians, identified as 43-year-old Saheed Akinrole and 49-year-old Nurení Sobowale, and injuries to police officers.

The incident occurred on August 24, 2026, while officers from the Ikire Division were responding to a distress call regarding an alleged abduction. During the response, suspected political thugs attacked the patrol team on the Ibadan-Ife expressway, seizing a patrol vehicle and an AK-47 service rifle. The assailants reportedly used the stolen weapon to fire indiscriminately.

Significant accusations of police misconduct have emerged. Witnesses and the wife of one victim alleged that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Irewole Division, John Olatona Bamidele, opened fire on unarmed civilians. One witness claimed a police patrol vehicle maneuvered aggressively around a civilian SUV before a bullet struck her husband in the head. The Accord Party has condemned the incident as “an absolute disgrace to the Nigeria Police Force,” with State Chairman Pastor Victor Akande calling for the immediate arrest, dismissal, and criminal prosecution of DPO Bamidele.

Following the incident, the Osun State Police Command arrested four suspects: Sikiru Ademola Adedeji, Olalere Taiwo, Olalere Ademola, and Bankole Abiodun. The suspects allegedly confessed to being political thugs. Authorities also identified a suspect known as Ayewo, who reportedly used the stolen rifle to shoot indiscriminately, resulting in the deaths of two civilians and injuring three police officers.
