Illinois head coach Bret Bielema announced that the university is parting ways with defensive coordinator Bobby Hauck following only four games in his tenure. The departure was described as a mutual agreement after Hauck requested a meeting to discuss the leadership change.

Reports indicate that Hauck initiated the discussion, stating that his players “deserved better performance than what was being delivered.” While Bielema reportedly did not intend to part ways with Hauck, he acknowledged that the defensive unit struggled with communication, roster maximization, and identity.

The decision follows significant defensive struggles, including a 42-19 loss to Ohio State and a game where the team allowed over 200 rushing yards to UAB. Through the first four games, the Illinois defense ranked 100th in scoring defense and 111th in total defense. A successor for the position has not yet been named.
