Lu Huihuang, a freelance writer and human rights defender from Guangxi, has completed a four-and-a-half-year prison sentence. Lu was previously imprisoned in 2020 for ‘picking quarrels and provoking trouble’ following the publication of articles concerning labor rights, political reform, and government criticism.

Lu was re-arrested in February 2022 after calling for investigations into the ‘chained woman’ case in Xuzhou. This second period of incarceration resulted in a sentence of four years and six months for ‘inciting subversion of state power.’
