On India’s 80th Independence Day, the Jammu and Kashmir region continued to exhibit divergent social and political activities.

In Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, patriotic celebrations and ‘Tiranga rallies’ continued in cities such as Srinagar and Jammu. At Bakhshi Stadium, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah hoisted the flag and emphasized his government’s commitment to regional development, prosperity, and the restoration of statehood and constitutional guarantees.

However, the day also saw reports of widespread strikes, boycotts, and protests in parts of Jammu and Kashmir, where some groups observed the occasion as a ‘Black Day’.

In Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, demonstrations persisted in areas including Muzaffarabad and Mirpur. These protests remained driven by grievances regarding taxation, rising prices, and electricity shortages, alongside demands for increased political rights.
