India is advancing new regulatory frameworks to improve automotive fuel efficiency and reduce vehicle emissions.

In October 2026, the Ministry of Power notified the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE)-III norms for passenger vehicles. Scheduled for implementation between April 1, 2027, and March 31, 2032, these regulations aim to reduce CO2 emissions by tightening fuel-consumption targets. The framework includes compliance mechanisms such as super credits for electric, plug-in hybrid, and strong hybrid vehicles.

Following this, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways proposed a phased rollout of Bharat Stage VII (BS-VII) emission standards. This proposal suggests a timeline starting in April 2029 and continuing through April 2035, targeting nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, and fine particulate matter. The rollout is planned in stages, beginning with cars and SUVs, followed by small goods delivery vehicles and pickup vans, and eventually buses and heavy-duty vehicles.
