India is expanding its maritime and shipbuilding capacity through significant regional infrastructure projects and policy initiatives.

In Gujarat, the government launched the Gujarat Shipbuilding and Repair Policy 2026. This initiative aims to establish the state as a premier maritime manufacturing hub by creating two Integrated Mega Shipbuilding Parks and six new greenfield ports. The projects, which include shipyard developments at Mithapur, Ghogha, Vadhera, and Kuchhadi, are expected to attract investments exceeding Rs 35,000 crore.

Simultaneously, expansion efforts have been initiated in West Bengal. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh laid foundation stones for five projects valued at approximately 3,500 crore rupees. These developments involve Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) and Yantra India Limited, focusing on constructing large vessel shipyards in Raichak and upgrading existing facilities in Kolkata and Howrah to enhance the production of medium and small ships, ferries, and warships.
