In mid‑July 2026 analysts noted the 20 largest Indian stocks made up only 28% of total market capitalisation, the lowest share since 2020, as small‑ and mid‑cap stocks outperformed large‑caps. Fund inflows favoured small‑caps, which posted the strongest year‑to‑date returns, while large‑cap mutual funds still attracted the biggest net inflows despite weaker performance.

A week later, during 27‑31 July, a sharp rally in large‑cap stocks reversed that trend. Nine of the ten most‑valued companies collectively added Rs 2.51 lakh crore to market capitalisation, lifting the Sensex 2.67% to 2,034.87 points and the Nifty 2.59% to 616.15. Bajaj Finance led with a Rs 80,346 crore increase after a 28% profit jump; other gainers included Reliance Industries, Bharti Airtel, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, State Bank of India, Tata Consultancy Services, Larsen & Toubro and Life Insurance Corp. Hindustan Unilever was the sole decliner. Analysts attributed the surge to softer crude‑oil prices, improving geopolitical sentiment, strong June‑quarter earnings and renewed buying by foreign institutional investors.

By early August, market capitalisation among the top 10 firms experienced further volatility. Four major companies, led by State Bank of India with a gain of ₹63,922.03 crore following strong Q1 FY27 results, added approximately ₹1.43 lakh crore. However, six of the top 10 companies saw a combined decline of roughly ₹1.23 lakh crore, with Life Insurance Corporation of India seeing the largest drop of ₹40,543.23 crore. Broader indices showed mixed performance as investors reacted to geopolitical tensions, US employment data, and fluctuations in crude oil prices.
