The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor project is progressing toward its goal of launching service in 2027. Construction is approximately 80 percent complete, with the Surat-Vapi section expected to be finished by December 2026. The 508-kilometer corridor will include 12 stations across Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, offering both ‘Rapid Bullet Trains’ and ‘Local Bullet Trains.’

Efforts are underway to develop indigenous manufacturing capabilities alongside the use of Japanese Shinkansen technology. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the first indigenously manufactured bullet train is expected to begin track testing by May or June 2027. Looking further ahead, authorities plan to introduce an ‘E10 Made in India’ bullet train capable of speeds up to 350 km/h by 2030.

Recent infrastructure milestones include the successful launch of the project’s first steel bridge in Maharashtra. The 100-metre-long structure, weighing 1,405 metric tonnes, was installed over NH-3 at Dive-Anjur village in the Thane district. Fabricated in Trichy, Tamil Nadu, the bridge was positioned at night using automated mechanisms to minimize highway disruption.

To support operational speeds of up to 320 km/h, the corridor is implementing advanced track engineering, such as movable ‘swing-nose crossings’ and canted turnouts to eliminate mechanical jolts. The infrastructure will feature dual point machine switch rails and an interlocking signaling system designed to withstand extreme temperatures. Additionally, a Multi-Modal Transport Hub is under construction at Sabarmati to integrate the high-speed rail with the Ahmedabad Metro, the Sabarmati broad-gauge station, and the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS).
