To combat surging onion prices caused by supply chain disruptions and weather-related crop impacts in Maharashtra, the Indian government initiated a market stabilization strategy. This began with the deployment of the ‘Kanda Express’, a specialized transport initiative using railway rakes to move buffer stocks from Nasik to major hubs including Delhi, Chennai, Ernakulam, Madurai, and Guwahati. Following the transport phase, the government transitioned to retail intervention, offering subsidized onions at Rs 35 per kg through agencies like NAFED, NCCF, and Kendriya Bhandar.

By September 6, the government reported selling approximately 4,000 tonnes of buffer onion stock across 17 cities during the first ten days of the subsidized retail intervention. NCCF Managing Director Anice Joseph Chandra stated that the federation alone has sold 1,500 tonnes so far. The program is active in several states, including Delhi-NCR, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Odisha.

Despite these efforts, retail prices have seen a significant upward trend. Data from the Department of Consumer Affairs shows average retail prices increased approximately 90% between June and September 2026, rising from ₹29.5/kg to ₹56.1/kg. This surge is attributed to weather-related delays; the major red onion crop from Maharashtra, expected in October, has been delayed by one to 1.5 months. Additionally, increased rainfall in Madhya Pradesh has caused crop spoilage. Analysts suggest prices may reach yearly highs between late September and late October, as the current Garwa pink crop nears the end of its storage life and new arrivals from Maharashtra are not expected until after November.
