India is pursuing a strategic transition from a global manufacturing hub to a creator of indigenous intellectual property in the mobile phone sector. Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced a target to launch Indian-designed, manufactured, and branded smartphones by October 23, 2028.

The initiative focuses on mastering complex engineering, such as radio-frequency communications and power management. Success has already been noted in printed circuit board design, with an Indian design selected by a major United States telecommunications provider for 5G-plus handsets.

To support this shift, the government is utilizing the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme and the Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme (MPMS), which includes an outlay of 625 billion Indian rupees. These efforts aim to deepen domestic value addition and strengthen supply chain resilience. Electronics have already become India’s third-largest export category, with officials noting that increased skill development and manufacturing incentives are critical to this industrial expansion.
