The Indian Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has proposed a roadmap to mandate Advanced Emergency Braking Systems (AEBS) in new passenger vehicles to improve road safety. The proposal targets M1 category vehicles, including passenger cars and SUVs.

Under the draft notification, all new passenger car models sold in India would be required to feature AEBS starting October 1, 2030, with existing models in production required to comply by October 1, 2032. The technology utilizes sensors such as radar, cameras, and LiDAR to detect obstacles and automatically apply brakes if a driver fails to react to an imminent collision.

The regulatory framework also includes other safety milestones, such as requiring steering effort to meet specific industry standards by October 1, 2027, and mandating Automatic Command Steering Functionalities (ACSF) and Emergency Lane Keeping Systems (ELKS) for transport vehicles like taxis by October 1, 2029. MoRTH will review public feedback for 30 days before finalizing these rules.
