In August 2026, India’s automotive and fuel sectors experienced significant growth. The automobile industry reached record wholesale sales, with total production across passenger vehicles, three-wheelers, two-wheelers, and quadricycles hitting 3,157,822 units, a 16.9 percent annual increase according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).

Passenger vehicle sales surged by 36.5 percent to 439,309 units. The three-wheeler segment grew by 22.8 percent, while two-wheeler sales rose by 10.5 percent to 2,034,698 units. Within the two-wheeler category, scooter production grew by 26.7 percent, outpacing motorcycle production growth of 9.1 percent. Exports also saw a 22.2 percent increase. Experts attribute this performance to robust consumer confidence, strengthening rural markets, and improved financing conditions.

Fuel consumption also trended upward. Petrol demand rose between 7.88 percent and 9.1 percent year-on-year. Diesel consumption increased by approximately 6.46 percent to 10.2 percent, reaching volumes between 6.27 million and 7.00 million tonnes. This diesel surge was driven by erratic monsoon rainfall necessitating increased irrigation pump usage, alongside sustained demand in construction and freight transport. Additionally, aviation turbine fuel sales increased by 5.6 percent, while liquefied petroleum gas consumption showed signs of weakening as demand shifts toward piped gas.
