Indian celebrities are increasingly speaking out against the misuse of artificial intelligence to create non-consensual deepfake content. 

In early August, actress Mrunal Thakur issued a warning that creating or sharing AI-generated deepfakes using her likeness is illegal and would result in legal action. She encouraged the public to document and report accounts distributing such content. 

By late August, actress Shalini Pandey also addressed the issue after a fabricated video using her likeness circulated on social media. Describing the content as ‘completely fabricated’ and ‘deeply disturbing’, Pandey condemned the targeting of individuals through AI, particularly women, and urged users to report rather than share the misinformation. These incidents reflect a broader trend involving various Indian stars and have prompted discussions regarding privacy, consent, and the need for safeguards against generative AI.
