Discussions regarding the Indian national cricket team’s strategic direction and the status of senior pacer Mohammed Shami have intensified. Initially, former wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik suggested that the team’s top-order combination might change for upcoming series and advised against selecting Shami for the 2027 ODI World Cup, despite Shami’s domestic performances.

Following Shami’s continued exclusion from squads for the tour of New Zealand, debate has emerged regarding the transparency of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selectors. While selectors have cited fitness concerns, Bengal coach Laxmi Ratan Shukla stated that Shami was fit but had requested rest for a Ranji Trophy match to allow for player testing. Former batter Mohammad Kaif has also questioned the lack of clarity surrounding Shami’s international standing given his previous success.
