The Indian Navy is pursuing a dual strategy of domestic technological indigenization and expanded regional maritime presence. Efforts to bolster indigenous defense capabilities include the utilization of the Innovations for Defence Excellence framework and the approval of projects worth over Rs 3,500 crore. To enhance strike capabilities, India has explored potential deals with Russia involving refurbished Kilo-class submarines and Kalibr-PL cruise missiles.

Furthering its strategic footprint, India has funded infrastructure projects on the Agalega Islands in Mauritius to improve maritime surveillance in the southwest Indian Ocean. Domestically, the Navy is advancing Project 18A to develop next-generation stealth guided-missile destroyers.

In a significant expansion of these domestic efforts, the Cabinet Committee on Security, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a project exceeding 40,000 crore rupees to construct eight next-generation stealth corvettes. These vessels, designed with an indigenous stealth profile, will have a displacement of approximately 2,000 tonnes and a top speed of 30 knots.

Construction will be split between two state-owned shipyards: Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata is expected to build five ships, while Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) will build three. The project aims for over 70 percent indigenous content to support the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. These multi-role vessels are intended for maritime surveillance, coastal defense, anti-submarine warfare, and search and rescue. The first warship is targeted for delivery by 2030, supporting a broader goal to grow the Navy to more than 200 ships by 2035. Recent developments indicate that contracts for these vessels are expected to be signed in the coming days, with efforts underway to potentially accelerate the construction timeline.
