During a ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ outreach programme in Pune, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi urged students to ‘smash patriarchy’. Gandhi criticized what he described as a ‘Manusmriti mindset’, arguing that women should not have identities limited to being daughters, wives, or mothers, but should instead possess independence from male authority.

The remarks prompted a political dispute with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Union Minister Kiren Rijiju accused the Congress party of selectively targeting Hindu traditions while failing to address issues faced by women in minority communities, specifically mentioning Triple Talaq. Rijiju noted that Indian women are making significant progress in sectors such as ISRO and aviation, suggesting that true empowerment must be inclusive of all religions.

Other BJP leaders challenged Gandhi’s rhetoric by citing the Modi government’s legislative actions, including the abolition of instant triple talaq and the implementation of a 33 per cent reservation for women in legislatures. BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj further accused Gandhi of attempting to create a ‘false narrative’ designed for ‘memes and reels’ to gain social media traction. Swaraj also alleged political hypocrisy, citing the absence of female ministers in Congress-led states like Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh.

Religious and political figures also responded. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath accused Gandhi of denouncing India’s traditions and heritage, advising him to study ancient texts like the Atharvaveda and Matsya Purana. Additionally, Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati criticized Gandhi for an ‘anti-Hindu religious mindset’ and a ‘malicious attitude’ toward Sanatan traditions, arguing that Gandhi presented verses out of context for political gain.
