In early July 2026 Indian officials described Global Capability Centres (GCCs) as moving from low‑cost back‑office units to high‑value research, design and innovation hubs. A senior Ministry of Labour official and Karnataka’s chief minister set a goal of attracting 500 new GCCs by 2029, creating 350,000 jobs and delivering about $50 billion in output. The ICAI Global Orbit Summit 2026 reported more than 2,100 GCCs employing 2.36 million people and generating close to $100 billion annually. At the CII National GCC Business Summit on 9 July, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced an ambitious target of 5,000 GCCs by 2030, noting that US firms account for two‑thirds of existing centres, that over 1,200 are AI‑first, and that GCCs contributed about $68 billion in direct gross value added in FY 2025, with projections of $155‑199 billion by FY 2030.

The day before the summit, Karnataka chief minister D.K. Shivkumar met more than 150 GCC leaders in Bengaluru, reaffirming the state’s aim to become a multinational innovation hub and aligning the effort with Prime Minister Modi’s “Viksit Bharat” vision. The ICAI Global Orbit Summit in New Delhi reinforced these themes, highlighting finance innovation, AI, ESG and talent development as priorities for the GCC ecosystem.

A Finance Ministry forecast released in August projects the GCC sector’s gross value addition to double to roughly $150 billion by 2030. Multinationals are now locating AI centres, risk‑function hubs and R&D units across a broader set of states—Gujarat’s GIFT City, Karnataka, Telangana and tier‑II cities in Uttar Pradesh—intensifying inter‑state competition and expanding India’s role as a global knowledge‑export hub.
