Indonesia has initiated a series of actions to address food security and corruption within its agricultural sector. In early August, Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman announced a crackdown on rice fraud, with the Food Task Force identifying 39 suspects in 38 cases of alleged irregularities. These irregularities involving fortified and premium rice reportedly caused losses totaling approximately 71 trillion rupiah and 98 trillion rupiah. Consequently, about a dozen senior officials within the Ministry of Agriculture were dismissed for alleged ties to food-mafia networks.

Following these developments, the Ministry expanded its focus to include egg procurement and climate resilience. Minister Sulaiman clarified that the dismissal of a regional coordinator in Surabaya was due to the failure of local units to purchase eggs from domestic farmers at mandated prices during the Free Nutritious Meal program, rather than gender discrimination.

To prepare for the 2026 El Nino phenomenon, the Indonesian government has increased its rice reserves to 5.2 million tons and bolstered corn reserves to 159,000 tons. The government is also utilizing Bulog to accelerate the absorption of domestic grain to protect farmers from weather-related price volatility.
