Under directives from President Prabowo Subianto, Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has initiated several programs focused on narcotics control and pharmaceutical independence.

In late September 2026, the President ordered BRIN to develop affordable early detection tools for drug addiction to strengthen narcotics prevention. BRIN also indicated plans to research improved rehabilitation methods and address potential drug distribution loopholes involving vaping. 

By late October 2026, research efforts expanded toward national drug independence. BRIN began developing 19 herbal medicine candidates to achieve phytopharmaca status by utilizing domestic spice resources. This initiative involves coordinating with the Ministry of Health and the Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) to move candidates through clinical trials and scientific standardization.
