The Indonesian logistics sector is experiencing a period of digital transformation and increased shipment volumes, alongside calls for improved infrastructure integration.

Recent developments include the introduction of Portify, a ‘One Stop Logistics Platform’ by PT Talenta Nusa Cipta, which aims to digitize the ecosystem by integrating freight forwarders, container depots, and ports into a single workflow to replace manual processes. This period of growth is further evidenced by KAI Logistik’s KALOG Express, which reported its highest monthly volume of 2026 in August, seeing a 30% increase in shipments compared to the first half of the year.

Operational growth has continued through August 2026, with terminal operators reporting significant increases in traffic. PT Indonesia Kendaraan Terminal Tbk (IPCC) recorded a 15.33% year-on-year increase in ship calls and a 1.56% rise in Completely Built Up (CBU) vehicle traffic, totaling 607,196 units. This aligns with a 13.44% increase in national CBU production reported by GAIKINDO. Additionally, IPC Terminal Petikemas (IPC TPK) saw an 8.37% increase in container handling volume, reaching 2.51 million TEUs from January to August, with notable growth at Terminal Teluk Bayur (14.6%) and the Tanjung Priok hub (13.2%).

To support long-term industry needs, IPC TPK has engaged in human resource development through the MAGENTA internship program. This initiative, organized by BP BUMN, provided 46 participants with exposure to digital terminal workflows and cargo handling operations at the Tanjung Priok container field and the Integrated Planning & Control Room.

However, industry experts have cautioned that expanding container port capacity must be matched by strengthening land-side logistics. Concerns have been raised regarding potential bottlenecks in the distribution chain, with experts advocating for better data integration through the National Logistics Ecosystem (NLE), improved human resource development, and the optimization of rail-based freight to mitigate issues with over-dimension over-load (ODOL) vehicles.
