Indonesia’s Ministry of Religious Affairs initiated a national mosque cleaning movement, known as ‘Geber Mas 2026’ (Gerakan Bersih-Bersih Masjid), to coincide with the country’s 81st Independence Day celebrations.

Minister of Religious Affairs Nasruddin Umar introduced the campaign by calling for bureaucratic efficiency and unity among civil servants. The movement, which began at Masjid Fatahillah in Jakarta, aims to foster ecological awareness and spiritual quality by ensuring places of worship are clean.

The initiative encourages ‘gotong royong’ (mutual cooperation) among families to maintain carpets, toilets, and drainage systems. The program seeks to involve over 50,000 mosques and prayer rooms across the country, with the long-term goal of reinforcing mosques as community hubs for social, educational, economic, and cultural empowerment.
