Indonesia continues to leverage its textile heritage to bolster the creative economy and tourism. Building on previous efforts to integrate traditional motifs into modern lifestyles, government officials are now highlighting the specific economic potential of traditional textiles and the modest fashion sector.

Minister of Industry Muhammad Sarmuji reported a significant rise in ikat weaving exports, noting that values reached US$34,000 in the first half of 2026, up from US$13,600 during the same period the previous year. To further penetrate modern markets, Sarmuji is encouraging product innovation in traditional Batak textiles, such as Ulos fabric, for use in home decor and ready-to-wear clothing.

Complementing these industrial efforts, Minister of Tourism Widiyanti Putri Wardhana identified batik and weaving as primary drivers for the growing modest fashion sector. She noted that fashion serves as a vital component of shopping tourism, encouraging international visitors to engage with local artisans. Citing the Global Islamic Economy Report 2024-2025, Wardhana emphasized the massive scale of this opportunity, noting the global modest fashion market is projected to reach US$433 billion by 2028.
