Indonesia is working to establish itself as a major telecommunications and internet connectivity hub for the Asia-Pacific region. By leveraging its strategic geography, the country aims to offer alternative global internet traffic routes, particularly as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East create risks for existing submarine cable corridors.

Telkom Indonesia is pursuing the diversification of global corridors, including Trans-Pacific, intra-Asia, and Asia-Europe routes, as well as new connections to Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East.

To support this infrastructure, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries has identified four strategic landing station locations for international submarine cables: Jakarta, Manado, Jayapura, and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). The station in Papua is specifically intended to enhance connectivity with Australia by aligning with existing Australian network points. The government has identified over 100 potential hub points to optimize regional digital infrastructure.
