Indonesia’s tourism sector saw significant expansion in 2025, employing 25.91 million people and generating US$18.27 billion in foreign exchange. This represented a 9.41 percent increase in earnings from the previous year. Tourism investment also rose by 56.5 percent, reaching Rp73.6 trillion, though more than half of these investments remain concentrated in Jakarta and Bali.

To address this concentration, the government is focusing on decentralizing investment through the development of six tourism-oriented Special Economic Zones (SEZs): Mandalika, Kura Kura Bali, Tanjung Kelayang, Tanjung Lesung, Lido, and Likupang.

Looking toward future targets, the government aims to attract between 16 million and 17.6 million international tourists in 2026, with a long-term goal of 19.1 million visitors by 2027. The national objective is to generate approximately $24 billion in foreign exchange earnings in 2026. While international arrivals showed positive trends through September 2026, regional leaders noted a decline in domestic tourism due to rising airfares.
