Indonesian cinema is seeing an increase in horror-comedy productions, highlighted by the upcoming releases of ‘Hungry Ghost Festival’ and ‘Ghosthing’.

‘Hungry Ghost Festival’, directed by Imam Darto and produced by MVP Pictures, focuses on Chinese-Indonesian traditions. The plot follows a young man named Raka who travels to Semarang to discover his origins, only to encounter supernatural elements during the Ghost Month. To prepare for the film, cast members such as Aci Resti observed traditional Cioko celebrations.

‘Ghosthing’, directed by Arie Aziz and produced by Imperial Pictures, is scheduled for release on October 15, 2026. The story features an indigo mortician, Alfian, and an influencer spirit, Maya, who must solve the mystery of Maya’s death. Actors Baskara Mahendra and Yasamin Jasem have discussed the creative challenges of blending humor with emotional depth and situational comedy.

Recent reports indicate that actors are undergoing specialized preparation for these roles, including makeup workshops for corpse beautification to enhance the technical realism of the genre.
