Regional governments in Indonesia are implementing initiatives to strengthen the local halal industry and sharia economic ecosystem.

In North Sumatra, Governor Bobby Nasution announced plans to increase the annual quota for free halal certification for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) from 1,000 to at least 5,000 starting in 2027. This follows efforts in Semarang to facilitate certification for the culinary, batik, and craft sectors to prepare for the XXXI National Musabaqah Tilawatil Qur'an in September 2026.

Building on these certification efforts, the North Sumatra Provincial Government, Bank Indonesia, and the Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH) launched the Sumut Halal Fest 2026 in Medan. The event aims to establish the halal industry as an economic driver by increasing MSME capacity, expanding certification, and improving sharia economic literacy.
