Indonesian Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar has advocated for the modernization and strengthening of religious education, specifically focusing on pesantren (Islamic boarding schools).

In early October, Umar emphasized the necessity for religious preaching and education to adapt to advancements in artificial intelligence and digital media to remain relevant to modern lifestyles. He also expressed support for establishing a Directorate General for Pesantren to enhance government support for these institutions.

By late October, the Minister expanded his focus to include the revival of scientific traditions within pesantren. Drawing inspiration from the historical Baitul Hikmah, Umar encouraged an inclusive, interdisciplinary approach to education, urging schools to produce scientists capable of contributing to global knowledge across various disciplines.

During the 2026 Santri Day celebrations at Istiqlal Mosque, Umar reiterated the call for pesantren to integrate modern science, technology, and artificial intelligence with traditional studies. He envisioned students becoming doctors, engineers, and scientists while maintaining their religious identity. 

Beyond education, the Minister highlighted religious diplomacy as a strategic tool for addressing global humanitarian issues, noting that Indonesia’s moderate religious landscape can serve as a model for international peace. He also addressed student welfare, stating that protecting santri from violence, bullying, and harassment must be a priority. To support these goals, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving institutional quality through Law Number 18 of 2019, which focuses on teacher competence and economic independence.
