Indonesian Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid has called on Meta to accelerate the deactivation of accounts belonging to users under the age of 16. This demand follows Government Regulation No. 17 of 2025, known as PP TUNAS, which aims to protect children in the digital environment by restricting social media access for those under 16. The government has also demanded stricter enforcement against illegal content, including online gambling, pornography, hate speech, and disinformation, warning of potential administrative sanctions or access blocks for non-compliant platforms.

Following these regulatory pressures, TikTok announced the deactivation of 9 million child accounts to comply with PP Tunas. Meta has deactivated 184,000 accounts of users under 16—consisting of 85,000 on Instagram and 99,000 on Facebook—and migrated 22.5 million child accounts to teen account categories. However, the Indonesian government continues to classify Facebook and Instagram teen accounts as high-risk due to features allowing communication with strangers. Additionally, officials noted that Meta’s Threads platform has yet to report specific compliance measures or deactivations.
