As the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games approach, scheduled for September 19 to October 4, 2026, Indonesia is intensifying its preparations. The National Olympic Committee of Indonesia has confirmed a delegation of 432 athletes, supported by 148 coaches and 32 Chef de Mission officials. While Indonesia will participate in 35 of the 43 contested sports, football has been omitted because the country did not meet the Asian Football Confederation’s qualification limit of 16 teams.

To support these efforts, the government has significantly increased the budget for national training centers (Pelatnas) to Rp222 billion, up from an initial Rp81 billion. Minister of Youth and Sports Erick Thohir confirmed that these funds will be disbursed quickly to various sports federations.

In light of the exclusion of three key disciplines from the 2026 program, Indonesia has adjusted its medal expectations. Minister Thohir has set a target of winning four gold medals, a reduction from the seven gold medals secured during the 2022 Asian Games. He has also called for public support for the contingent.

Recent preparations have focused on key disciplines. The Indonesian Weightlifting Federation (PB PABSI) is targeting four medals from an eight-person squad, including Olympic gold medalist Rizki Juniansyah and defending champion Rahmat Erwin Abdullah. The Indonesian Soft Tennis Association (PP PESTI) is also in the final stages of training following international trials in South Korea, aiming for two silver medals. Other preparations include the badminton team at the PBSI training centre and a 14-swimmer squad aiming to end a 36-year medal drought in aquatics.
