Authorities in Cuba are investigating several incidents of sabotage and theft targeting critical infrastructure. In Artemisa, an investigation was launched into the theft of 135 meters of energized cables at the Máximo Gómez Báez Thermoelectric Plant in Mariel. The incident resulted in the unplanned loss of power generation from one unit, leading to the arrest of two perpetrators and the release of two security guards on bail.

In a separate incident involving the Havana Dairy Complex, four men received prison sentences of 15 to 20 years for stealing 140 liters of dielectric oil from a substation transformer. This theft caused production to stall and resulted in economic damages exceeding 10.2 million pesos, disrupting the supply of essential food products.

Officials have characterized the theft of dielectric oil as an “epidemic” across the country. In response, the Havana Electric Company has begun using “chemical traps” in substations to identify thieves, as the volume of stolen oil reportedly nears the nation's total production levels.
