Since May 2026 the surge of gang fighting in Port‑au‑Prince and its outskirts has killed dozens, injured hundreds and forced more than 1.5 million Haitians from their homes. Hospitals such as MSF’s Cite Soleil were repeatedly evacuated as gunfire struck their compounds, and the death toll in Cité‑Soleil alone exceeded 80 people, including a teenage footballer.

The United Nations‑approved Gang Suppression Force (GSF) began active operations, notably raiding the Village de Dieu neighbourhood and seizing the residence of gang leader “Manno”. By June only about 1,000 of the authorized 5,550 troops were on the ground, while other contributors – Chad, Guatemala (which pledged to double its contingent to 300 soldiers) and Jamaica – prepared additional deployments.

The International Organization for Migration reported that the internally displaced population now stands at roughly 1.5 million, with over 300,000 displaced in a single month of May‑June fighting. Funding shortfalls threaten humanitarian response as the Atlantic hurricane season looms.

UN Secretary‑General António Guterres visited Haiti in mid‑June, describing the crisis as the most severe humanitarian emergency in the Western Hemisphere, apologising for the UN’s failure to curb the violence and urging donors to fund the $880 million response plan. He thanked the Dominican Republic for logistical support.

In July the Haitian government and the GSF signed a memorandum of understanding to coordinate arrests, weapons hand‑overs and detainee transfers, while the UN Security Council prepared to consider extending the GSF mandate. The UN continues to stress that security improvements are prerequisite to credible elections, which remain pending as voter registration proceeds in nine of ten departments.

Human‑rights officials highlighted that children constitute half of gang detainees and called for their release, registration and reintegration as the anti‑gang force moves into an operational phase alongside the Haitian National Police.
