Efforts toward religious harmony and interfaith cooperation have recently faced challenges due to inflammatory rhetoric in West Africa.

In Nigeria and Australia, initiatives were highlighted to promote peaceful coexistence. In Nigeria, a conference organized by the Muslim World League and Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa Iqamatus Sunnah emphasized that interfaith understanding is essential for building trust. Similarly, Uniting Church congregations in Australia implemented programs to foster intercultural connection and hospitality.

However, tensions have emerged in Nigeria and Ghana. In Nigeria, the Guild of Interfaith Media Practitioners Nigeria warned that provocative remarks attributed to Islamic cleric Sheikh Yahaya Jingir regarding Christians could undermine social stability.

In Ghana, following the arrest of a pastor for allegedly making derogatory comments about Prophet Muhammad, religious leaders have initiated a reconciliation process to defuse rising tensions. At a meeting facilitated by National Chief Imam Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu at the Police Headquarters in Accra, Christian and Muslim representatives, including Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno, met to signal a commitment to peace. This included a symbolic handshake between Pastor Adjei and the individual accused of assaulting him.

While the Ghana Police Service has arrested individuals involved in the unrest—including Apostle Daniel Junior Yaw Adjei for offensive comments about Islam and Imam Masud Abdullah for allegedly advocating violence—authorities and religious leaders have emphasized that freedom of expression does not grant a license to incite violence or cause social harm.
