In October 2026, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul warned that disruptions to shipping, including Houthi rebel attacks and Russian strikes in the Black Sea, could lead to global food shortages. During a meeting in Istanbul involving representatives from the E3 and R4 groups, Wadephul accused Russia of deliberately risking food insecurity by targeting commercial vessels. By November 2026, Saudi Arabia’s Deputy Chief of the General Staff, Fahd Al-Ghafili, echoed these concerns during the Manama Dialogue in Bahrain. Al-Ghafili identified the Strait of Hormuz, the Red Sea, and the Bab al-Mandab Strait as essential arteries for the global economy and energy security. He highlighted the ongoing impact of Houthi attacks on commercial vessels and noted the growth of the Multinational Maritime Defense Coalition, which has attracted 14 member countries to date. ## Timeline ### 2026-11-01: Fahd Al-Ghafili calls for international cooperation to secure maritime corridors Saudi Deputy Chief of Staff Fahd Al-Ghafili urged international collective action to protect vital maritime corridors against threats like Houthi attacks, citing risks to global energy and food security. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/fahd-al-ghafili-calls-for-international-cooperation-to-secure-maritime-corridors ### 2026-10-23: German Foreign Minister calls for maritime security cooperation German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul urged international cooperation to protect maritime routes from Houthi, Iranian, and Russian threats during a summit in Istanbul with European and regional powers. 4 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/german-foreign-minister-calls-for-protection-of-international-shipping-routes --- Cite as: International maritime security cooperation efforts.
