Major international energy firms are divesting their onshore interests in Nigeria to local companies. Shell Petroleum B.V. signed an agreement to sell its full interest in the Shell Nigeria Gas Group to Vaaris Energy Limited, a move intended to refocus investments on deepwater and integrated gas positions. This includes the sale of pipeline infrastructure operating across Ogun, Abia, and Rivers states.

Following this trend, TotalEnergies finalized the $800 million sale of its 10 percent non-operated interest in the Renaissance joint venture to Vaaris. While TotalEnergies divested interests across 15 primarily oil-producing licenses, it retained full economic interest in three gas-producing licenses—OML 23, OML 28, and OML 77—which supply roughly 50 percent of the gas used by Nigeria LNG.

These divestments reflect a broader shift by international companies away from onshore Niger Delta operations, which face issues such as pipeline sabotage and crude theft, toward deepwater projects and liquefied natural gas.
