Iran has initiated several strategies to enhance energy security and stability. In the Sistan and Baluchestan province, authorities have called for comprehensive energy management plans, including fuel reserves and demand management, to prepare for seasonal demand peaks. Efforts in this region include exploring local renewable electricity production and energy storage for areas without gas network access.

Nationally, the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Organization (SATBA) is transitioning from importing power plant equipment toward full domestic localization. This strategy focuses on technical knowledge transfer and domestic production of high-voltage and switching gear to reduce dependence on foreign supply chains.

To address energy imbalances, the government is also implementing smart energy management systems. These initiatives include monitoring systems for large-scale industries—such as steel, aluminum, and iron ore—which are projected to reduce industrial consumption by 20% to 30%. Additionally, pilot programs for smart management in government buildings have already demonstrated energy reductions exceeding 20%.

Expanding on these efforts, Energy Minister Abbas Aliabadi recently stated that the country’s electricity industry development is “on the right track.” He highlighted the strategic importance of regional electrical connections, noting existing links with Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Turkey, Iraq, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Efforts are reportedly ongoing to expand these networks, including seeking a connection to Russia via a neighboring country.

To manage rising electricity demand driven by artificial intelligence, Aliabadi advocated for technical shifts such as the adoption of electric vehicles. He also noted that integrating solar energy will require expanded energy storage technologies to maintain balance across production, distribution, and consumption.
