Chilean author Isabel Allende has been awarded the 2026 Planeta Prize for her novel ‘La hora antes del alba’ (The Hour Before Dawn). The award, presented in Barcelona, includes a prize of one million euros.

The winning novel serves as a sequel to her 1982 work, ‘La casa de los espíritus’ (The House of the Spirits), following the character Alba through the era of the Chilean dictatorship. During the award presentation, Allende, who is 84, noted that she entered the competition under the pseudonym Luz Ventura and described the decision to participate at her age as having “very little to lose.”

In her acceptance speech, Allende connected the themes of her writing to contemporary global politics, specifically mentioning the threat that authoritarianism poses to democracies.
