Authorities in Chile’s Antarctica Province are conducting technical evaluations of trekking routes on Isla Navarino to improve emergency response capabilities for the upcoming summer season. Following a previous season that required 13 rescues, the Provincial Committee for Disaster Risk Management (Cogrid) identified several key areas for assessment, including the Róbalo Valley, Cerro La Bandera, and Valle de Los Bronces. Efforts aim to make complex routes more expeditious for firefighters and police by creating safety trails and maintaining paths. These operations involve coordinating with Conaf to protect native forests and addressing obstructions such as fallen trees and beaver dams in the Róbalo and Ukika valleys. Additional measures include evaluating the potential use of small emergency vehicles and the recovery of the Charles refuge to support rescue operations. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-11: Safety and maintenance initiatives launched at Cerro Chapelco and Isla Navarino Authorities in Argentina and Chile are implementing safety and maintenance measures: Chapelco is establishing new structural and safety protocols, while Isla Navarino is clearing trails for emergency access. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/safety-and-maintenance-initiatives-launched-at-cerro-chapelco-and-isla-navarino ### 2026-09-12: Isla Navarino authorities evaluate trekking routes for emergency response Authorities in Chile are evaluating trekking routes on Isla Navarino, including the Róbalo Valley, to improve emergency access and rescue operations ahead of the summer season. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/isla-navarino-authorities-evaluate-trekking-routes-for-emergency-response --- Cite as: Isla Navarino emergency response and trail maintenance.
