Following a resumption of conflict in March 2026, Israel has established a security zone known as the ‘Yellow Line’ and a ‘forward defense’ zone extending 8 to 12 kilometers into Southern Lebanon. This military presence has caused significant destruction to infrastructure and agricultural land, preventing residents from returning to numerous villages. While no official annexation decree has been issued, the United Nations has characterized these security zones as violations of Lebanese sovereignty. Recent field data suggests that Israeli territorial expansion may extend further into the Iqlim al-Tuffah region. The strategic objective appears to be the creation of a continuous buffer zone stretching from Gaza and the West Bank to the borders of Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon. In Lebanon, this expansion could involve advancing toward areas such as Kfarmann, Melita, and Jezzine to link southern forces with units near Mount Hermon, potentially connecting southern Lebanon with southern Syria. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-24: Israel may expand buffer zones into Lebanon's Iqlim al-Tuffah Reports indicate Israel may expand its buffer zones into Lebanon's Iqlim al-Tuffah and Bekaa regions to secure borders and link southern Lebanon with southern Syria. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/israel-may-expand-buffer-zones-into-lebanons-iqlim-al-tuffah ### 2026-09-14: Southern Lebanon faces potential Israeli annexation amid military expansion Concerns grow over the potential annexation of Southern Lebanon as Israel establishes a security zone and forward defense area extending up to 12km into Lebanese territory. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/southern-lebanon-faces-potential-israeli-annexation-amid-military-expansion --- Cite as: Israeli military expansion in Southern Lebanon.
