A multi-center Israeli study led by Dr. Idit Lachover-Roth has found that accidental skin contact with common food allergens poses an extremely low risk of systemic allergic reactions or anaphylaxis in children. The three-year trial, involving 293 participants, tested the application of allergens such as milk, peanut, egg, and sesame to the intact skin of children and teenagers.

While approximately 15% of exposures resulted in mild localized symptoms like redness or swelling, 83.7% produced no reaction, and no cases of anaphylaxis were observed. Researchers concluded that skin contact carries an “almost negligible risk of severe reactions,” though they continue to recommend standard precautions such as avoiding ingestion and carrying epinephrine auto-injectors.

Related research indicates that the baseline incidence of IgE-mediated food allergy is approximately 4.7% globally. Experts noted that impaired skin barriers, such as those found in infants with atopic dermatitis, may allow environmental proteins to act as sensitizers through the skin.
