Sources: 3. Developments: 2. Following investigations conducted between 2025 and 2026 in regions including Piedmont, Tuscany, and Puglia, animal rights groups have documented severe welfare and hygiene violations at weekly markets. Specific abuses reported include birds kept in overcrowded cages in temperatures exceeding 37 degrees Celsius, injured quail, and instances of trout being killed with metal bars in front of customers. In response to these findings, organizations such as Animal Law Italia, Animal, Zoout, and the Free Animal Sanctuaries Network have launched a national petition under the ‘Not for Sale’ campaign. The movement seeks a uniform national prohibition on the sale of live animals at markets and fairs to address animal cruelty and public health risks. While some municipalities and the Puglia region have already implemented bans, advocates are pushing for consistent legal frameworks across Italy. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-27: Italian animal rights groups launch petition to ban live animal sales Italian advocacy groups are petitioning for a nationwide ban on selling live animals at markets following investigations into animal mistreatment and public health risks. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/italian-animal-rights-groups-launch-petition-to-ban-live-animal-sales ### 2026-10-12: Animal welfare violations documented at Ivrea and Rivarolo markets Activists have documented severe animal welfare and hygiene violations at weekly markets in Ivrea and Rivarolo Canavese, calling for a regional ban on the sale of live animals. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/animal-welfare-violations-documented-at-ivrea-and-rivarolo-markets --- Cite as: Italian animal rights campaign against live animal sales.
