In late July 2026, Italy began deploying Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems as part of a national mobility reform. On 3 August, Bergamo launched the country’s first fully electric e-BRT line, linking Bergamo, Dalmine and Verdellino. Funded by the national recovery plan, the project integrates with existing tram and future rail services.

Simultaneously, Frosinone launched a free-of-charge BRT pilot on 3 August. The six-kilometre, 20-stop corridor operates 54 daily trips using a fleet of 19 electric and eight methane-powered buses. In Turin, GTT conducted road tests for an 18-metre electric fleet destined for line 2, which aims to compete with private cars through dedicated lanes and “bus-friendly” signals.

The expansion has reached Rome, where plans are advancing to connect peripheral areas to major metro and rail hubs. Proposed routes include Casalotti-Battistini, which has received 400,000 euros for preliminary design, and the Anagnina-Ciampino corridor, which would utilize 22 articulated electric buses.

However, the implementation has faced scrutiny. The Centro Studi sulla Mobilità e i Trasporti (CeSMoT) raised concerns regarding the branding of these projects, suggesting the term “BRT” is sometimes used to present standard improvements—such as protected lanes and traffic light priority—as revolutionary innovations. CeSMoT noted that these systems may differ in lifecycle costs and efficiency compared to traditional trolleybus or tram infrastructures used in cities like Bari and Rimini.

## Timeline
