Italian and Italian-American communities are marking Columbus Day through various cultural, educational, and musical initiatives in the United States and Italy.

In New York, the 82nd Columbus Day Parade featured groups such as the Borgetto Club and a delegation from La Stampa USA. The festivities included the Columbus Day Gala, which honored former footballer Roberto Baggio as the ‘Greatest Italian Soccer Player of All Time’. Further cultural recognition in New York included the sixth edition of the Caruso Tribute Prize, featuring a Fifth Avenue parade and a gala at the Italian American Museum, and the Columbus International Award at Saint Patrick’s Old Cathedral School, where Sardinian artist Mario Donato Vinci performed.

Educational and institutional ties were strengthened through a three-year protocol signed in Rome between the Italian Ministry of Education and Merit and the National Italian American Foundation. This agreement aims to integrate the history of Italian emigration to the Americas, dating from 1880, into school curricula to promote Italian language, values, and the ‘Made in Italy’ brand.

Musical and traditional exchanges continue to play a role. While students from Genoa’s ‘Sandro Pertini’ Music High School and Campania’s ‘T. Confalonieri’ Music High School performed in New York and Chicago, the city of Genoa also held its traditional Colombian Ceremony. This event focused on the theme ‘Navigators of the Future’ to encourage youth toward exploration.
